This last term, repurpose, has become the loud, new battle cry of the sustainable business movement. “Repurposing” or breathing new life into underutilized spaces, is now driving the evolution of urban retail.

As main streets continue to languish under a tight global economy, once vibrant downtown shops in cities across the globe remain shuttered. From New Orleans to Berlin, block after city block of usable commercial space sits vacant. Even thriving metropolitan centers like London, San Francisco and New York City have seen urban vacancies rise in recent years.
